Book Review: Meredith McClaren - Super Fun Sexy Times Vol. 1 [ARC]

Post cover

If you're looking for a spicy graphic novel with light hearted fluff, then this book might just be for you!

Volume 01 of Meredith McClaren's Super Fun Sexy Times includes five LGBT+ sex positive short stories of superheros, supervillans and everyone in between. With motifs of sex education and body positivity, I went into this graphic novel with high expectations.

Before I begin my review, I would like to say a big thank you to Netgalley for giving me an ARC (which stands for an 'advanced reader's copy' for those of you who don't know). I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The five stories are as titled:
1. Worst Case Scenario
2. The Pre-Fuck
3. Good Foundations
4. Safe
5. The Responsible Parties

My favourite is definitely number 3 (Good Foundations) followed by joint second place Safe and The Pre-Fuck.

Overall, I gave this graphic novel a:

My rating!

a 3.5/5 stars!

MY REVIEW:
may contain spoilers
Erotica isn't really my thing but nevertheless, I decided to read this graphic novel with hope that the positive representation of characters and sex would be done right. And let me say, I wasn't disappointed!

Don't worry, I won't go into depth about each story because spoilers! But what I will do is give you a little summary of each story:

01. Worst Case Scenario
A male superhero and a male supervillain are trapped in a room together.

02. The Pre-Fuck
The female partner in a heterosexual couple brings up the topic of sex as she is still a virgin. They discuss boundaries, fantasies and kinks.

03. Good Foundations
A non-binary person comes out as non-binary to their partner.

04. Safe
A couple discusses boundaries (as they want to make sure the other is comfortable) before trying out a new fantasy.

05. The Responsible Parties.
A supervillain assassin has had a really tough day at work. His husband helps him to stop stressing and relax.

This graphic novel does sex education, LGBT and plus size postivity the right way!

The first story was my least favourite, which explains why it took my a little while to get into it. But after that, I I started to like it even more.

After reading other people's reviews on Goodreads, I noticed that a lot of the reviews mentioned how they didn't like the art style. Personally, I don't see where they're coming from. The illustrations are really good! Yes, this particular style may not be my favourite, but it certainly is not bad!

Will I be picking up another book by Meredith McClaren?
Who knows? Maybe I will.

Once again, thank you to Netgalley, Meredith McClaren, Oni Press, and Limerence Press for allowing me to have this ARC!

Have you received your ARC? Or perhaps you are patiently waiting for August 20th (the release date) before you read it? Let me know in the comments!

Stay awesome,
Hannah :)
